Leaky Run Defense in South Beach

The Buffalo Bills win streak stopped at 4 as the Miami Dolphins defeated the Bills Sunday by a score of 28-25.

The Bills entered the game in prime position to control their destiny down the stretch of the 2016 season.

The Bills defense, which had been stout since Week 3 vs Arizona was unable to stop little known Dolphins Running Back Jay Ajayi who ran for over 200 yards on the ground for the second straight game.

NFL: Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins

Ryan Tannelhill played mistake free football, for which may be the first time in his career playing against the Bills. Watching the game I was waiting for Tannelhill to make the head scratching play, I tweeted during the game “Tannelhill is going to give us one soon” (meaning a turnover) but that one never came. The Dolphins were content with running with Ajayi who was a little known rotational player before his breakout game last week.

The Bills were still in control of the game despite Ajayi effort, leading in the 3rd Quarter by a score of 17-6. The Bills played the game with a hobbled LeSean McCoy, who started the game, but wasn’t himself as he exited the game early.

The game was there for the taking for the Bills but unfortunately they were unable to do so, as they watched Miami snatch the game away in the 2nd half. The Bills are now 5 games in with new offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn and while the running game has taken off as a late (excluding this game) the passing game continues to be lackluster. Tyrod Taylor threw for 1 TD to Marquise Goodwin, who also led the teams in yards with 93, most coming on a 67 yard pass play. Taylor passed for 200 yards, missing 2 of his top target Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods.

The Bills defense did lose Aaron Williams, who was blindsided by Jarvis Landry on a block. Williams status for the rest of the season is now in jeopardy as well as his career. Lorenzo Alexander added to his NFL leading sack count (8), as he sacked Ryan Tannelhill once on Sunday.

The Bills dropped a winnable game to the Dolphins Sunday and now face 2 of the top teams in the league in the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks in back to back weeks. The Dolphins loss hurt, especially as the Bills are now 1-2 in the division and the Dolphins have won a few in a row and might be a wild card challenger for one of the 2 AFC spots.

Before last week I suggested the Bills must win this game to have a legitimate shot at the Playoffs with the 2 upcoming foes. The Bills are seriously facing a 3 game losing streak heading into the bye, which would leave them at 4-5 and their playoff hopes hanging on by a thread.
