Buffalo Bills Season Preview

Hello All, my name is Eugene Taylor, III and I will be writing this weekly blog about my beloved hometown team the Buffalo Bills. My weekly post will come out every Tuesday the exact time of the post is still being determined as I need time to analyze the game film and also work my regular 9-5 job.

With that being said I look to give an unbiased opinion of the Buffalo Bills team and their front office regime, I offer a wealth of football knowledge that through my post you should be able to see. A little about myself, I was recently married this past summer to a wonderful woman who support my sports addiction, May 2010 I received my Criminal Justice Degree from Erie Community College and I will look to further my eduction in Sports Journalism at nearby Buffalo State College, I am currently employed by a local financial intuition in the area where I supervise and team of about 10 people. I was born and raised in the City of Buffalo and still reside in the heart of the city today. I had no choice but to be anything but a Buffalo Bills fan. Okay but enough talking about me lets talk about the Bills.

The Bills open up this season with an away game versus the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, this game should be a great measuring stick to see how far the Bills run game defense has improved giving the Chiefs have a great rushing attack with Jamaal Charles a University of Texas alum and the well traveled Thomas Jones. When these two teams got together last year it was an overtime thriller as the Bills ultimately lost 13-10. That particular game showed the fight the Bills could muster up during the mist of an awful start to the season where after the game they stood in the standings a hapless 0-7 . What I remember most about this games was how the Bills was in it until the end while being up against a team that would eventually go on to a berth in the AFC Playoff where they went on and lost to the Baltimore Ravens.

Looking forward to this Sundays game September 11, 2011 (RIP to all who was lost in the tragedy 10 years ago) and trying to get the bad taste of last year lost out of our mouths, I can see the Bills going into Arrowhead Stadium and stealing a victory from the Chiefs. Most reports have Quarterback Matt Cassell listed as doubtful to play leaving the Chiefs with Tyler Palko as their starting QB week 1 many probably would suggest that coach Todd Haley would pound the ball against the Bills vulnerable run D, however with the revamped defense and the #3 overall pick from this past Aprils Draft Marcell Dareus that strategy should fail, not to mention Kyle Williams who was just signed to an extension for his outstanding performance from previous years and hopefully and healthy Shawne Merriman.

The Bills did not make any stellar free agents signings doing the Free Agent frenzy at he end of July but they did bring in some keys guys to help this defense in Kirk Morrison, Nick Barnett, resigning of Drayton Florence and with the development of younger players the D should be much improved. The Offense still seems to be a patch work unit with the trade of longtime player Lee Evans you’ll have Donald Jones as the starting WR opposite of Steve Johnson, Roscoe Parrish will remain in the slot position as his receiving career seemed to be revived last year under Coach Chan Gailey before an injury derailed his season against Chicago in Toronto. Now to the Offensive line that seems to have the most questions on the team Demetrius Bell will begin the season at Left Tackle even though he has showed inconsistent play throughout the preseason the coaching staff feels that he will be the best to play the position after experiencing with Andy Levitre during preseason Levitre will slide one slot over and play Left Guard. Ryan Fitzpatrick goes into the season as the #1 QB for the first time in his career the Harvard grad will need to have a good showing this season to have the front office not take the highly touted standout QB Andrew Luck from Stanford in next years draft. There is also question marks surrounding the rushing attack for this team, on the teams Official depth chart Fred Jackson is listed as the start in front of 2nd year man CJ Spiller however we all know doing the middle of the preseason he did voice his displeasure over a contact dispute and not starting the 2nd preseason game in Denver. I understand the Bills are trying to feed Spiller the ball after spending a high draft pick on him and not to mention him being the 3rd 1st round RB brought in in the last 8 years and being the only 1 left on the active roster I’m sure the team will try at all cause to have him succeed. Spiller current showing and production from last year and this past off season doesn’t seem as if he is ready to carry the load and therefore Fred Jackson should get the bulk of the carries as he has shown the ability to produce in this offense.

I anticipate this years Buffalo Bills team to compete however I’m not sure if that will translate into ending the team current 11 year playoff drought. After looking at the schedule I envision this team will be hovering around a .500 winning percentage for this season. Hopefully this post will be able to add some insight on this season and I will be able to add more after this Sunday game.
